A Shop That Plans From the Sink Outward

Most countertop shops sell you a colour first. We ask which sink you have bought, because the sink is the part of the job that decides everything structural about the top, and it is the part nobody thinks about until it goes wrong.

Why the Cutout Gets All Our Attention

An undermount bowl hangs off the underside of the slab. To make room for it we cut a hole through the middle of a run, which leaves a narrow rail of stone at the front and another at the back. The front rail is where people lean, where a heavy pot lands, and where the top is thinnest in cross section. It is also directly over a cabinet opening rather than over solid framing.

Put a full sink under it and you have a cantilevered load on the weakest part of the whole installation. That is not a reason to avoid undermount bowls, which are worth having. It is a reason to build the cutout properly: radius the inside corners so stress spreads instead of concentrating, polish the cut so the saw does not leave micro fractures behind, and rod the rail with steel in epoxy whenever it measures narrow.

Riverside Kitchens in Particular

Two local things change how we work. The first is heat. A kitchen window facing west here takes hours of hard afternoon sun in summer, and quartz is a resin bound material that expands more than granite and discolours under sustained heat. Where a top runs under a big west window we will say so, and sometimes we will recommend granite instead.

The second is the housing stock. Slab on grade tract homes make up much of the city, and slab movement telegraphs up through cabinets. If a cabinet run is out of plane, a stone top bridging it is carrying a twist before anyone has put a sink in it. We shim and check across the whole run before anything is bonded down. That is dull work and it is where most callbacks are avoided.

What We Will Tell You Not To Buy

If your existing top is sound and only the sink has dropped, you do not need a new countertop, you need the bowl re anchored. If a chip is on an edge you never touch, filling it is optional. We would rather do the honest smaller job and be the shop you call when the kitchen actually gets redone.
